Get up to speed with the latest in social media news! There’s been quite a bit happening with Facebook lately, so we’ve collected the latest news (and rumors) to keep you informed.
- Instagram Video: Not to be outdone by Twitter’s successful video app Vine, Facebook announced on Thursday, June 20, that Instagram would now support video, with 13 different video-specific filters as well as Cinema – Instagram’s video stabilization technique.
- Facebook Security Breach: On Friday, June 21, 2013 Facebook acknowledged a security breach that exposed six million users’ personal information – like phone numbers and e-mail addresses – over the last year. The breach was brought to Facebook’s attention the previous week, and fixed within 24 hours.
- Facebook Page Insights Update: Facebook recently announced updates to the network’s analytics tools, Facebook Page Insights. Specifically addressing concerns over the value of the “People Are Talking About This” metric (PTAT), Facebook will begin breaking this metric out into sections: Page Likes, Page Tags & Mentions, Page Check-ins, and People Engaged. That’s not all – the viral metric will become an “engagement rate” that includes clicks, a post-specific score card will help users evaluate the positive and negative metrics of each individual post, and user demographics will improve to provide a better feel for what activity is resonating with various types of users.
- Facebook Testing Chat Rooms: Could chat rooms be in Facebook’s future? According to TechCrunch, Facebook is testing chat rooms for us on the social networking site. Chat rooms would be an attempt to boost the social network’s footing with user messaging, as well as increase the amount of time users spend on the site. Facebook regularly tests potential features and updates, so it is by no means guaranteed that Chat will be rolled out for all Facebook users. Stay tuned – we’ll be keeping an eye on this story!
